It has always been crap. When Microsoft released Outlook 2011 for Mac, it was a decent improvement, but it still had all of the problems that Entourage did, but it was a little better. Outlook 2016 seems to be an even bigger improvement. In the end, Outlook on Mac is seriously hobbled compared to the Windows version.

I prefer Apple's built-in Mail, Calendar, and Contacts apps because they are mostly problem free. If there's an issue with Apple's Mail app, I don't lose my email data since I can go locate the email data and manually get out it.
