GOOGLE Drive for Mac/PC which helps millions of people store important files and pictures on their computers is being scrapped and replaced with two new storage options. Google accounts get 15GB of storage free, shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. For additional storage, you can upgrade to a premium subscription plan as an in-app purchase. Subscriptions start at $1.99/month for 100 GB in the US, and can vary by region.

Google has been moving away from its Drive app for both PCs and Macs, and now the platform has an official end date. Today, Google officially announced that it will be stopping support for the Google Drive app for both PCs and Macs beginning December 11, 2017. After that, the service will shut down permanently on March 12, 2018. Google notes that users who are still using the app will be notified that it is “going away” beginning in October, giving them plenty of time to use a different service instead. Google will be marketing its own alternative, “Backup and Sync,”. “With this launch, Google Drive for Mac/PC is officially deprecated. It will no longer be supported starting on December 11th, 2017, and it will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018.

We encourage you to use Drive File Stream. As an alternative to or in addition to installing Drive File Stream, you can upgrade to the new version of Drive for Mac/PC, called Backup and Sync.” Google Drive has been around for quite some time and has been a go-to option for backing up files and what not on computers for many users.

It’s not too surprising that Google is shifting away from it, though, considering it has been pushing the Backup and Sync app for several months now. It’s good to see that Google is officially announcing the changes, and giving a final date for users to be aware of before they’ll have to switch. Are you a fan of Google Drive in general? If you were previously using the legacy 'Google Drive' app, you may have a 'Google Drive' folder on your Mac. During installation, you may be prompted with a choice to move this folder to your Trash or preserve it. Accessing Files Google Drive File Stream will automatically open when you log in to your Mac. You can also launch the 'Google Drive File Stream' app found in your /Applications folder.

When running, you'll see the Google Drive logo in your menu bar. 'Google Drive' appears in your Finder sidebar under 'Devices.' Click the 'Google Drive' device to access your files.

'My Drive' and 'Team Drives' are both available via Google Drive File Stream. If you aren't a member of any Team Drives, you won't be able to select the 'Team Drives' folder. Drive File Stream is fully integrated with Finder. Files stored in Google Drive will display previews and useful metadata, just like any other file on your Mac. Google File Types Google file types, s uch as.gdoc,.gsheet, and.gslide, can't be opened with an app on your Mac. When you click these files your default web browser will open to the Google Drive web interface.
