I have had a WD My Book Essential (WDMBE) for a few years which has been hosting a media server on an iMac. When I updated the OS to Sierra 10.12.3, fairly recently (late adopter), I started to notice the media server would fail every so often. I realized it was due to the My Book unmounting itself from the Mac. After disconnecting and remounting the drive, I backed up(!) and tried running First Aid in Disk Utility on the WDMBE. On the main directory, it found no problems. When I selected the My Book volume in Disk Utility and ran First Aid again, it reported that the volume partition needed updating, which I did, and now I seem not to be getting the drop-outs.
